Valentine’s Day Is Coming…Great

For those of us who are single, Valentine’s Day can feel a little depressing at times. But rather than sitting around and moaning about what we don’t have, let’s focus on what we do: God’s love. That love that’s so perfect and full of life. That love that is reaching for you and calling your name even now.

First of all, let’s define love. This word is thrown around so carelessly nowadays, and I myself admit to using it way too much. What is true love? Well, 1 Corinthians 13: 4-7; 8 sums it up:

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails…” (BibleGateway)

So, now we know what love is. The Bible says that God is love. 1 John 4:16 says:

“And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.” (BibleGateway)

God is love. Therefore, He is patient, He is kind, He does not envy. For every statement made in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7; 8, you can insert God’s name. Is that not the coolest thing?

Not only is He love, but He acts in it towards us. He loves us, so very deeply. How do we know? Well, John 15:13 says:

“Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” (BibleGateway)

Romans 5:8 says:

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (BibleGateway)

I mean, put the pieces together here, guys. The greatest sign of love is demonstrated when a friend dies for a friend. God loves YOU so much that He willingly allowed His precious Son to live as a human and be violently killed. Jesus loves you to the point where He willingly took on all of your sin, got mercilessly beat up, humiliated and mocked, endured a heart wrenching separation from His father, and DIED. He laid down His life for you, AND YOU WEREN’T EVEN HIS FRIEND YET!!!! That’s some serious love right there.

Great, so we know that He loves us, but what does that mean? Well, let’s see. Lamentations 3:22-23 say:

“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” (BibleGateway)

Zephaniah 3:17 says:

“The Lord your God in your midst, the Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.” (BibleGateway)

Because of this great love He has for is, if we come to Him and submit to Him, He promises to give us joy and peace, to heal our hurts, and to restore us and bring us into the fullness of Him. It’s the most beautiful thing. We just have to come. His arms are wide open. The best thing, is that once we grab a hold of this love, it’s ours forever! Romans 8:38-39 say:

“For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (BibleGateway)

Psalm 136:26 says:

“Give thanks to the God of heaven. His love endures forever.” (BibleGateway)

Once you’ve got this love, don’t just keep it to yourself. Let it out for the world to see and know! Become love, just as He is love. John 13:34-35 says:

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (BibleGateway)

So, there you go. Whether you’ll be celebrating Valentine’s Day with somebody super special or not, grab a hold of these verses, and celebrate God’s love this Valentine’s Day.
